A letter to my dancers

A Letter to the Dancers of Centennial School
Genevieve Dunn
July 2012

Dear Dancers of Centennial Elementary School,

You are a dancer; dance is a part of you.
It is something you do, and it is something you can feel.
Maybe you want to be a professional dancer.
And maybe you don’t.
But either way always dance for the love of dance itself.
Other people may make you feel good about how your dancing looks.
They may tell you how graceful you look or how beautifully you move.
But even so, don’t dance for them.
They may make you feel bad about your dancing, criticizing the movements or telling you that you left out some particular step.
So don’t dance for them.
Always,
Dance for yourself.
Dance because somewhere inside you there is an impulse to move and groove.
And if you share that joy of dancing with the world,
You are giving the world a gift.
And the world will give back to you.

Sincerely, your teacher,
Ms. Dunn
